“I really didn't know I wanted to work in assisted living, until I got this position with Woodside,” Kathy Harmon says. After receiving her RN at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, she worked on the neurological unit at Borgess Hospital here in Kalamazoo. “Then I got married and moved to Kentucky and got a job as a Case Manager in a licensed Home Health Agency and did home visits.” Kathy moved back to Kalamazoo and worked as a Unit Manager on the Medicare Unit at a skilled facility, a Case Manager for Bronson Home Healthcare, and the Clinical Supervisor at a private duty agency.
“When I started this position [at Woodside] I felt like I walked into the position I was groomed for from all my past experiences,” she says. “I love working with the elderly. This position gives me the opportunity to help make their lives as good as they can be. I have daily contact with the residents and work with a really great staff that doesn't just "house" our residents, but helps the residents feel like this is home.”
Assisted living is such a great opportunity for those who can no longer live home alone to still have the independence of having their own apartment with the help they need.
Woodside has a unique resident-centered care program. “Classes are held for all the staff,” Kathy says. “We want to empower residents to continue to live life (gain new friendships, a new home, a new way of living) instead of feeling as though they have given up everything by moving out of their home and their previous way of living. We want them to live life to its fullest for as long as they can.”
