"We visited many assisted living communities but it was a real advantage having Stephanie’s experience as a Woodside employee to draw upon. She really saw things day by day. A lot of places you may walk in and think, is this a good first impression or is this authentic? Is this a daily thing? Do these people always act like they’re acting now?
"Because we’re a very sensitive and caring family we really look at those things. And so one of the things that we were looking at, of course, was the quality of care because my mother had many needs and that’s why we were looking at assisted living. So when we visited all these places we were really looking for the compassionate and caring places, not the “this is our business,” places. We wanted to find a place that would make a home for my mother.
"When we went to Woodside—and we went a couple of different times—and saw that no matter who you met—even the residents—they were very happy and caring and glad to greet you, we realized this was the way things were all the time. The people we met were just themselves and that just really gave us a peace about things.
"The activities they offered were designed to keep my mother motivated mentally and physically and even spiritually, which was what we were looking for.
"And then of course the cleanliness, the upkeep—you know it’s a beautiful place. Stephanie had told us that they would change the decorations for the different seasons and really make it a homelike atmosphere. And it is. It’s just like having a second family.
"One of the things my mother was concerned about was getting the correct medication at the correct time. Within an hour of being at Woodside she was relieved of that worry when the nurse came by with her medications right on time.
"The compassion and reliability of the staff are two of the best aspects of Woodside. It’s like we [the family] are there through the staff. Although we are there a lot, we can’t be there every moment. But we don’t worry. It’s just like having our own daughters and sons there taking care of her."
